Prabowo to Discuss Oil Availability with Putin
President Prabowo Subianto will discuss global oil availability issues with Vladimir Putin. Prabowo is scheduled to meet the President of the Russian Federation during his state visit to Russia this week.
Prabowo departed from Jakarta to Russia on Sunday late at night, 12 April 2026. The Gerindra Party Chairman will undertake a non-stop flight of approximately 12 hours before arriving in Russia on Monday morning local time.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that Prabowo will meet Putin on the same day. “President Prabowo is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with President Vladimir Putin in the afternoon,” said Teddy in a written statement released by the Presidential Secretariat after Prabowo’s departure.
According to Teddy, this meeting between Prabowo and Putin is very important, especially amid conflicts in various regions, including the Middle East. “Amid continuously changing global dynamics, this meeting is highly crucial,” he said.
Teddy stated that the two leaders will discuss several strategic issues, including strengthening national energy resilience through continued cooperation with the Russian government. “Continuing cooperation with the Russian government and ensuring a stable national energy supply, including oil availability,” he said.
In addition, Teddy said, Prabowo and Putin will also exchange views on the development of the global geopolitical situation. “Voicing Indonesia’s strategic position in maintaining global stability and peace,” he stated.
Prabowo took off from Halim Perdanakusuma Indonesian Air Force Base, Jakarta, to fly to Russia on Sunday around 11:10 p.m. WIB. Several other officials are accompanying Prabowo to Russia. Those joining Prabowo’s entourage are Foreign Minister Sugiono, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
This April 2026 visit will be Prabowo’s third trip to Russia as president. The former defence minister previously visited Russia in June and December 2025. Prabowo met with Putin on both occasions.
President Prabowo previously responded to assessments that he frequently travels abroad. According to the former defence minister, his official duties abroad aim to anticipate global oil price fluctuations.
According to Prabowo, a head of state has the responsibility to meet various development targets. He said it is not an easy task. “So, brothers and sisters, don’t think standing here is an easy job,” said Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, 8 April 2026.
He conveyed that those who want to become president must be prepared to face that reality. “Those who want to become president, congratulations, really. I’ve already become one, so I have to work hard. No holidays for me,” said the man who has contested four presidential elections before being elected.
Prabowo then discussed assessments from others that he considered different from the reality. “They say Prabowo is travelling abroad. Brothers and sisters, to secure oil, we have to go everywhere,” he said.
He cited his most recent foreign visit to Japan at the end of March 2026. At that time, Prabowo said he also sought various energy sector cooperations.
At that time, Prabowo said he would travel abroad again soon. However, he did not disclose the next destination. Prabowo claimed that the planned official trip also aims to secure Indonesia’s interests.
Since being inaugurated as president in October 2024, or one and a half years in office, Prabowo has made at least 35 foreign visits. The most recent was to Japan and South Korea at the end of March to early April 2026.
