Prabowo to Commence Giant Sea Wall Construction on Java's North Coast: Don't Wait for Disaster
President Prabowo Subianto has announced that the Giant Sea Wall project on the northern coast of Java will be built immediately. Prabowo considers this project crucial for protecting the northern coastal region of Java from the dangers of coastal erosion.
This was conveyed by Prabowo during the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) and the Submission of the 2027 State Budget Draft (RAPBN) at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (14/8).
When discussing the Danantara Development Management Fund (DDMF), Prabowo mentioned the Giant Sea Wall as one of its projects.
“Giant Sea Wall, large embankments to secure the northern coast of Java. This is absolutely something we must do; let us not wait for disaster to arrive,” said Prabowo.
He stressed that Indonesia must learn from other countries, such as the Netherlands, which has built long-term protective infrastructure.
“The Netherlands built long-term protective infrastructure without needing to wait for disaster. The Giant Sea Wall in the Netherlands now protects millions of Dutch citizens and has become a symbol of Dutch national technological capability,” he explained.
Prabowo reiterated that the Giant Sea Wall on the northern coast of Java must be built immediately. He stated that this effort is being undertaken to save tens of thousands of hectares of land that have already begun to sink due to rising sea levels.
“Furthermore, our Giant Sea Wall on the northern coast of Java must become clean water infrastructure, must become a new growth corridor, and an engineering project that builds the capabilities of the nation’s people,” said Prabowo.
He also stated that technological breakthroughs from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) will be utilised for this Giant Sea Wall project.
The Giant Sea Wall is projected to require 15 to 20 years to complete. The project is also said to be divided into 15 segments from West Java to East Java.
“This is a long time. I do not know which president will inaugurate it. But I am determined that the 8th President will start this project,” he said.
