Prabowo to Build Merah Putih Fishermen's Village in Miangas
President Prabowo Subianto will build a Merah Putih Fishermen’s Village on Miangas Island in the Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi. He conveyed this plan during his visit to this northernmost outer island of Indonesia on Saturday, 9 May 2026.
“Hopefully, there will be a fishermen’s village here in the not-too-distant future,” said Prabowo, as broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday.
According to the Chairman of the Gerindra Party, the fishermen’s village will include ice makers up to cold storage or refrigerated warehouses. The aim is for all fishermen to use it to improve the quality of their work. The fishermen’s village will also be equipped with a public fuel filling station (SPBU) specifically for fishermen.
Prabowo also highlighted the addition of facilities on Miangas during the era of former President Joko Widodo. In 2016, Jokowi inaugurated the Miangas Airport, which was built since 2012.
Continuing those efforts, Prabowo now wants to build facilities to assist the fishermen there. “There’s already an airport; perhaps we can market the fish products so that their income increases,” he said.
Currently, Prabowo stated, the government has provided boat assistance for Miangas. The boat weighs 15 gross tons.
Prabowo visited Miangas after attending the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines.
Miangas is the island closest to the Indonesia-Philippines border. It is located in the Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi. Prabowo landed at Miangas Airport on Saturday, 9 May 2026, around 10:45 WITA. The Gerindra Party Chairman was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
Prabowo arrived in Miangas via a direct flight from the Philippines. “He returned to the homeland today, but before going to Jakarta, he stopped by for some agendas there (Miangas),” said Sugiono, as broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday.
Prabowo’s arrival in Miangas was welcomed by several ministers from the Merah Putih Cabinet. Among them were Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Defence Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.
In addition, Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, and Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces General Tandyo Budi Revita were present.
