Prabowo to Build 5,000 Fishing Villages, Targets 1,300 This Year
President Prabowo Subianto has stated that the construction of fishing villages is a key instrument in realising national food security. He noted that fishermen play a vital role in supplying protein to the community, and their welfare must therefore be a priority. In its implementation, Prabowo has launched a programme for 5,000 Fishing Villages, with 1,300 villages targeted for realisation in 2026. “The government will build 5,000 Fishing Villages, with 1,300 villages to begin realisation this year,” Prabowo said. These integrated fishing villages will be equipped with various supporting facilities, such as ice plants and dedicated fuel stations for fishermen. Prabowo emphasised that the programme aims to strengthen the national food supply chain and ensure fishermen receive better welfare. Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated that the development of fishing villages is part of a sustainable blue economy transformation. “The Fishing Village programme not only increases catches and fishermen’s income but also strengthens national food security and creates new economic growth centres in coastal areas,” Trenggono said. Member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives, Daniel Johan, expressed full support for President Prabowo’s plan, noting that the programme has been eagerly awaited by coastal fishing communities. He specifically urged the government to guarantee subsidised diesel fuel for fishing vessels and pushed for the realisation of the programme beyond the symbolic inauguration of 1,386 villages in 2026.
