Prabowo: The Marsinah Tragedy Should Not Have Happened
President Prabowo Subianto has expressed his concern over the murder of labour activist Marsinah, stating that the tragedy should not have happened if the values of Pancasila and the constitution were properly upheld. He made the statement while delivering a speech at the inauguration of the Marsinah Museum in Nganjuk Regency, East Java, on Saturday.
“Indeed, the event of Marsinah being brutally murdered for fighting for factory workers should not have happened at all because our country was founded on the basic philosophy of Pancasila,” Prabowo said.
The President said that Indonesia was built on the principle of national unity amidst the diversity of ethnic groups, religions, languages, and races. According to Prabowo, the value of social justice for all Indonesian people has been affirmed in the 1945 Constitution, including through Article 33, which places the national economic system based on the principle of kinship.
He believes that this principle affirms that strong groups have a responsibility to help weaker groups. The President said that workers, farmers, fishermen, state officials, soldiers, and police are part of the people who must be protected by the state.
Meanwhile, leaders, politicians, and bureaucrats are said to only receive a mandate from the people to run the government.
Prabowo also reminded state officials, including soldiers and police, to understand that all the facilities and honour they have come from the people.
“Officials, soldiers, police, and the nation’s children are selected, financed, and paid by the people, and they are fed by the people,” Prabowo said.
According to him, if the basic values of the state are truly understood and internalized, then acts of violation against the people should not occur. He also expressed his gratitude that the incident that befell Marsinah occurred in the past and hopes it will be a lesson to improve the life of the nation and state.
On that occasion, the President said he felt honoured to have the opportunity to designate Marsinah as a national hero after receiving a joint proposal from labour organizations. Prabowo also mentioned that there is still a mindset among some business actors who are too focused on large profits while ignoring human values.
According to him, this approach does not fit with the spirit of the founding of the Republic of Indonesia. Prabowo then invited the business world to build the spirit of Indonesia Incorporated, which he calls a concept of a family state.
“All Indonesian people are shareholders in all the wealth of the Indonesian nation,” Prabowo said.
He affirmed that all leaders have a responsibility to fight for the welfare of the community with strong courage and commitment. (Ant/E-3)
