Prabowo Targets QRIS for Use in India
President Prabowo Subiandum intends for Indonesia’s digital payment system to be usable in India. If realised, users of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) will have the opportunity to use it for transactions in the world’s most populous country.
Prabowo conveyed this plan during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. “To strengthen cooperation in the financial sector, we welcome the progress in discussions regarding the cross-border QR payment linkage between Indonesia and India,” he stated.
The Chairman of the Gerindra Party hopes that the integration of digital payment systems with India will make cross-border transactions easier and more efficient. Furthermore, he noted that this step could also strengthen the financial sector resilience of both countries.
Through the cooperation currently being explored, the Indonesian public will eventually be able to use QRIS to transact in India. Meanwhile, users of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will also be able to transact in Indonesia through the interconnected payment systems.
On the same occasion, Modi welcomed the proposed discussions. “We are very pleased because India’s UPI payment system will be integrated with Indonesia’s payment system,” Modi remarked.
Modi stated that the policy would facilitate business activities between Indonesia and India. “This step will ease business activities as well as travel for the people of both countries,” he said.
Prime Minister Modi is visiting Indonesia for three days. He has been in Jakarta since Monday, 6 July 2026. In addition to visiting the capital, Modi will also travel to Yogyakarta to visit the Prambanan Temple.
President Prabowo officially received Modi during a state event at the Merdeka Palace this Tuesday. They also held a closed bilateral meeting attended by their respective delegations, followed by a luncheon.
A number of strategic Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) between Indonesia and India were signed at the Merdeka Palace. The meeting resulted in 16 agreements between the two nations.
In the presence of President Prabowo and PM Modi, one of the cooperation documents exchanged was an agreement between the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indian Space Research Organisation. This agreement covers cooperation in the field of space research.
Additionally, Indonesia and India also announced 15 other documents covering cooperation in various fields, ranging from defence, energy, and health to culture and technology.
