Prabowo Targets Indonesia's Energy Self-Sufficiency by End of 2029 at Latest
President Prabowo Subianto has once again emphasised the government’s commitment to achieving national energy self-sufficiency. He targets energy self-sufficiency to be realised by the end of 2029 at the latest.
“Energy self-sufficiency is our target by the end of 2029, at the latest. If possible earlier, we will work quickly,” said Prabowo during a working visit to SMA Negeri 1 Cilacap, Central Java, on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.
Prabowo stated that the government is making energy independence one of the main priorities in national development.
He emphasised that this target is not merely a long-term plan, but a commitment that will be pursued quickly and measurably.
According to Prabowo, Indonesia possesses vast energy resource potential. He described this natural wealth as a great gift that must be optimally utilised for the people’s welfare.
“We are optimistic; the Almighty has given us extraordinary sources,” he stated.
However, he reminded that this potential would be meaningless without good management and a strong commitment to safeguarding it. Because, in his view, good management can protect Indonesia from global conflicts of interest.
He added that countries rich in natural resources often become targets of international interest conflicts. To avoid such potential, Indonesia must manage this wealth as best as possible for national interests.
“It just depends on whether we are skilled at managing it or not, whether we dare to protect it or not,” Prabowo asserted.
