Prabowo Targets Garlic Self-Sufficiency Within Three Years

President Prabowo Subianto has announced that Indonesia is targeting self-sufficiency in garlic within the next three years. The statement was made during his state address at the Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Friday.

In his speech, Prabowo revealed that Indonesia has recorded significant progress in the food sovereignty sector. Over the past year, the government claims to have successfully achieved self-sufficiency in eight key food commodities. “In the last year, Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency in eight food commodities, and thus we realise that our achievements are quite encouraging,” Prabowo told the assembled legislators.

Despite the positive trend, the President acknowledged that several commodities still depend on imports, particularly garlic. Consequently, the government will focus efforts on increasing local production to overcome this dependency as soon as possible. “We are still not self-sufficient in garlic. We are striving so that within three years we can achieve garlic self-sufficiency,” he stressed.

Beyond garlic, the livestock sector also remains a significant challenge for the government. Prabowo noted that Indonesia has not yet achieved self-sufficiency for beef and buffalo meat. However, he offered a positive assessment for other animal protein needs, stating that domestic poultry farmers are now independently meeting the nation’s demand for chicken meat. “As I mentioned earlier, we are not yet self-sufficient in meat, not in beef, nor in buffalo, but we are for chicken meat,” the President concluded.
