Prabowo Targets End to Diesel Imports with Upcoming B50 Biodiesel Launch
President Prabowo Subianto has targeted an end to Indonesia’s diesel imports in the near future by accelerating the palm oil-based biofuel programme. The move is part of the government’s broader strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency within the next few years.
The statement was made by Prabowo during a speech at the 17th National Farmers and Fishermen’s Week (PENAS) in Gorontalo.
According to Prabowo, the government will soon launch the B50 biodiesel programme this July. Under this policy, diesel will be blended with 50% raw material derived from domestic palm oil.
“And we will move towards fuel self-sufficiency. Energy self-sufficiency. This July, in just a few days, we will launch B50,” Prabowo said.
He explained that the use of B50 biodiesel will reduce Indonesia’s dependence on energy supplies from abroad. With the increased utilisation of palm oil as fuel, the need for diesel imports is projected to be eliminated.
“B50 diesel will be processed from 50% palm oil. Thus, we will no longer import diesel from abroad. And we will save a great deal,” Prabowo stated.
Prabowo assessed that the measure not only impacts foreign exchange savings but also strengthens Indonesia’s position in maintaining national energy security. Moreover, Indonesia is one of the world’s largest palm oil producers, possessing significant potential to utilise it as an alternative energy source.
The Head of State is optimistic that the energy self-sufficiency target can be achieved in a relatively short time. He estimated that Indonesia only needs three to four years to become fully independent in meeting its national energy needs.
“I estimate in another three years, a maximum of four years. We will achieve energy self-sufficiency. We do not want to import anything for our fuel. For our energy,” he said.
