Prabowo Targets Completion of Nationwide School Renovations by 2029

President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for the renovation of all schools and educational units requiring repair to be completed by 2029. He stressed that the state is obliged to ensure every child can study in a safe and proper environment. “We will complete the renovation of all schools needing repair by 2029 at the latest,” Prabowo said during a plenary session at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (14/8/2026). “For me, the state must guarantee that every schoolchild learns in a safe and dignified school. Schools are where Indonesian children build their future.”

Prabowo stated that the condition of damaged schools must not be allowed to persist and be passed on to the next generation. He noted that many children still study under leaking roofs, with cracked walls and inadequate toilets. “This situation must not be inherited,” he asserted. The renovation programme will be accelerated in 2027 and 2028, with Prabowo describing it as the largest school renovation programme in the nation’s history. “We must dare to set high targets. There should be no more stories of collapsed schools or damaged classrooms left unrepaired for years,” he added.

In addition to structural improvements, the government plans to equip all classrooms with interactive flat panels (IFPs) to support digital learning. By the end of 2026, every school is expected to receive additional IFP units, with a target of four units per school. The government will also introduce long-distance learning broadcasts, allowing top teachers to deliver lessons from studios in Jakarta to classrooms across the country. Prabowo further reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that all state schools are free of charge, calling education a fundamental right for every Indonesian child.
