Prabowo Targets Completion of 17 Gigawatt Solar Power Plant Construction This Year
President Prabowo Subianto has targeted the completion of a solar power plant (PLTS) construction with a capacity of 17 gigawatts this year. This target was conveyed by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, after meeting Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.
According to Brian, Prabowo specifically requested that the PLTS be ready as soon as possible to replace diesel-based power plants. “The President inquired about the progress and asked for it to be accelerated,” Brian said in his statement following the meeting.
He stated that the government is optimistic about meeting the 17 gigawatt PLTS construction target. This target includes adding PLTS capacity as well as reducing diesel power plant (PLTD) capacity.
“For now, based on calculations conducted jointly with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, PLN, Danantara, and several experts from universities, approximately 17 gigawatts of PLTS installation can be carried out,” Brian said.
However, Brian did not disclose the locations for the PLTS construction. He explained that the matter would be handled by PLN as the main implementer. “The locations will all come from PLN as the implementer of the programme,” he said.
President Prabowo previously formed a task force to accelerate the conversion to clean energy in Indonesia. This task force will handle efforts to replace fossil fuel sources, such as diesel and fuel oil, with renewable energy.
Prabowo appointed the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, as the head or coordinator of the task force. “The President formed a task force team to accelerate (energy conversion), and we were given the task by the President as the head of the task force,” Bahlil said after a meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, 5 March 2026.
Bahlil said the task force has a target to convert diesel power plants (PLTD) to PLTS up to 100 gigawatts. “Because by converting from PLTD, diesel, to PLTS, it will result in efficiency for our electricity subsidies,” Bahlil stated.
