Prabowo Targets All Vehicles in Indonesia to Be Electric-Powered

President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has set a target for all transport in Indonesia to be powered by electricity in the future.

He made the remarks at the inauguration of the first-phase revitalisation of Semarang Tawang Station in Central Java on Thursday (30/7).

“We want everything to be electricity-based. We will build green energy, renewable energy. Not just trains — almost all of our vehicles will eventually run on electricity. Our trucks, our buses, our cars, our motorcycles,” Prabowo said.

At the same time, Prabowo stated that rail-based public transport is an important instrument of economic democracy.

He described railways as a vital instrument for growing the economy of the Indonesian people, saying that trains bring broad benefits to society, particularly for those on low incomes.

Prabowo noted that railways play a major role as an economical logistics instrument, and emphasised that trains must serve the wider public. He added that after this, the government will work on the Trans-Sumatra Railway.

“After Trans-Sumatra, there will be Trans-Kalimantan — if possible, we will start them simultaneously,” he said.
