President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has set a target for the provision of affordable generic medicines for all levels of society to begin to be realised within one year. “I hope that within this year we can start providing generic medicines at low prices to the people,” said President Prabowo during the inauguration of the Kiai Haji Muhammad Thohir Regional General Hospital in Krui, Pesisir Barat Regency, Lampung Province, as quoted from a Presidential Secretariat broadcast. According to the President, the government continues to pursue various policies to reduce domestic medicine prices, making them more accessible to the public. This cheap medicine programme runs in tandem with the national health service modernisation agenda currently being carried out by the government. “At present, we have distributed nearly 1,000 modern medical devices. We have begun distribution to all regional hospitals in 514 districts/cities,” he said. The distribution of modern medical devices is expected to improve the quality, efficiency, and precision of medical services in the regions. The President also announced that construction of the Central General Hospital in Jayapura, Papua, has been completed. Meanwhile, construction of the Central General Hospital in Riau has reached 85 percent and is targeted for completion by December 2026. Strengthening health infrastructure and providing affordable medicines are part of the government’s efforts to expand access to healthcare services for communities across all regions of Indonesia.
