Prabowo Targets 2 Million Electric Motorcycles, Prepares Zero Down Payment Scheme

President Prabowo Subianto is pushing for a massive increase in national electric motorcycle production, targeting 2 million units. He conveyed this while appreciating the domestic industry’s achievement of having produced 20,000 electric motorcycle units. In his speech at the launch of a national electric motorcycle in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java, on Thursday (13/8), the President challenged industry players, particularly the Indika group, to continue scaling up their production. “Today the Indika group has successfully produced 20,000 motorcycles. I told the Indika group, if you reach 200,000, I will come again; 2 million, I will come again,” Prabowo stated. To achieve this target, the Head of State instructed all relevant parties, including BPI Danantara, to strengthen the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia. This support is considered crucial to accelerating production penetration in the domestic market. Beyond production, the government is committed to facilitating public access to environmentally friendly vehicles through more affordable financing schemes. Prabowo affirmed efforts to lower instalment interest rates and provide options without a down payment. “We will lower instalment interest rates for the people. We will also try to make it possible without a down payment,” he said. The President also acknowledged that many people still use petrol-powered motorcycles. As a transitional solution, the government is formulating a trade-in scheme, allowing owners of old motorcycles to exchange them for new electric ones with minimal additional cost. “We have schemes for those who already own petrol motorcycles; we are thinking about how to do a trade-in. They can get a new motorcycle by just adding a little,” the President explained. This transition step is considered increasingly relevant given the global trend of restricting fossil fuel vehicles in major cities, such as the carbon taxes and zone restrictions implemented in Beijing. The President added that savings from using electric motorcycles could reach a minimum of 50 percent, or even up to 70 percent, compared to petrol-powered motorcycles.
