Prabowo Targets 100 GW Solar Power Plant Construction, Diesel Plants to Be Phased Out

President Prabowo Subianto has set a target of developing solar power plants (PLTS) with a total capacity of 100 gigawatts (GW). The move is aimed at strengthening domestic energy independence.

According to Prabowo, the government will accelerate the construction of solar power plants while gradually phasing out the use of diesel-fired power plants (PLTD).

“We have begun and will build 100,000 megawatts, or 100 gigawatts, of solar energy. The government will accelerate the closure of diesel-fired power plants and replace them with solar power plants,” Prabowo said during the presentation of the 2027 State Budget Bill and Financial Note on Friday (14/8/2026).

He said that this year the government is targeting the construction of 30 GW of solar power capacity and the retirement of 13 GW of diesel power plant capacity.

“We have been blessed by God Almighty with sunshine almost throughout the year. It makes no sense for our islands to keep waiting for ships carrying diesel fuel to obtain electricity,” he said.

In addition, the government is also promoting energy independence at the village level. Prabowo said that ideally every village should have a solar power plant with a capacity of 1 megawatt.

“With solar power, we can also build energy independence at the village level. Ideally, every village should have a 1 megawatt solar power plant,” Prabowo said.
