Prabowo Targets 100 Gigawatt Solar Power Plants Within Two Years

President Prabowo Subianto is targeting the construction of solar power plants (PLTS) with a total capacity of 100 gigawatts (GW) to be completed faster than the initial three-year target. Prabowo even challenged the Red and White Cabinet energy team to finish it within two years.

“If I give the energy team a three-year target, no. Two years,” said Prabowo during his remarks at the launch of the 100 GWp Solar Power Programme in Jembrana, Bali, on Tuesday (25/8).

Prabowo had previously set a target of building 100 GW of solar power capacity within three years. The target was announced while comparing Indonesia’s current electricity capacity, which he said reaches around 88 GW from various energy sources, including coal, oil, gas and geothermal.

“We will build 100 GW. And we are not playing around; our target is 100 GW in three years,” Prabowo stated.

However, Prabowo subsequently raised the challenge. He believes the government’s energy team should be able to move faster, especially after the government was deemed to have achieved its food sector targets ahead of schedule.

Prabowo said he had previously set a four-year target for food self-sufficiency. According to him, however, the economic, agricultural and food teams managed to achieve it within one year.

As a result, he is optimistic that the energy target can also be achieved more quickly. Prabowo even said the three-year target for building 100 GW of solar power is very likely to be reached in less time than that.

“I think we will probably get there in less than three years,” he said.
