JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto recounted that he had once been the target of Artificial Intelligence (AI) manipulation, one example being a video of him singing with a beautiful voice.

“My voice is terrible, I can’t sing. There’s one on YouTube, Prabowo singing, his voice sounds amazing. I was shocked. That’s pretty good. If it’s beneficial, it’s okay; if not, what then?” said Prabowo during a briefing at the Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4/2026).

Prabowo also discovered himself giving speeches in foreign languages.

“There’s another one of me speaking in Mandarin. And another in Arabic,” said Prabowo.

However, Prabowo admitted to letting such videos spread if they turned out to be advantageous for him.

“Because it was during the campaign, I thought it was beneficial in the Tapal Kuda region. So I stayed silent. If it’s beneficial for us, we stay quiet,” he said half-jokingly.

He explained the echo chamber effect or reverberation space that facilitates the spread of narratives by those exploiting technology on social media.

“The current slight problem is technology. With AI, artificial intelligence, with digital information technology, one person can have 1,000 accounts; they can buy tools that aren’t too expensive, and from these 1,000, they can be multiplied further,” Prabowo explained.

According to Prabowo, this phenomenon can create the illusion of public opinion through numerous accounts controlled by a few individuals.

“It seems to become a bit troublesome: 100 people, 200 people, 1,000 people, 5,000 people can cause a stir. This is called an echo chamber; it’s in intelligence studies. In the past, to damage another country, you sent troops and bombs; now you don’t need to—perhaps through social media games, slander, hoaxes,” he added.
