Prabowo Summons Erick Thohir and John Herdman to Hambalang: What's Afoot?

President Prabowo Subianto summoned the Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, and the Garuda National Team coach, John Herdman, to his residence in Hambalang, West Java, on Friday (19/06/2026).

The Minister of State Secretary, Prasetyo Hadi, revealed that the President has been working in Hambalang and has received several guests since the morning, including this afternoon.

“This afternoon, His Excellency received the Minister of Youth and Sports along with our national team coach,” Praseway told reporters.

Regarding the recent World Cup period, he expressed regret over the Garuda National Team’s failure to qualify. However, he noted the economic momentum arising from football competitions held every four years.

“We are also monitoring various initiatives in several regions, such as public viewing events organised by local governments and the private sector. I believe this is a very positive and beneficial development; we hope it fosters real economic activity within the community,” he said.

Furthermore, he expressed hope and urged the public to maintain faith that the Garuda National Team will qualify for the World Cup in the future.

Prasetyo also stated that the meeting would discuss PSSI’s future plans to achieve World Cup qualification. Additionally, preparations for the FIFA Series matches to be played by the national team next year were on the agenda.

During the occasion, John Herdman and Erick Thohir arrived together. Herdman expressed his appreciation for the support provided by the President and set a target to lead the Garuda National Team to the 2030 World Cup.

“We hope to bring this team to the World Cup in 2030. And we will need support from everyone,” he said.

Herdman also admitted to feeling both enthusiastic and nervous about meeting the President.

“Yes, of course, I am nervous,” he remarked.
