Prabowo Summons Erick Thohir and John Herdman to Hambalang: What's Afoot?

President Prabowo Subianto summoned Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir and Garuda national team coach John Herdman to his residence in Hambalang, West Java, on Friday (19/6/2026). State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi revealed that the president was working in Hambalang and had received several guests since morning, continuing into the afternoon. “This afternoon, he was due to receive the Youth and Sports Minister together with our national team coach,” Prasetyo told reporters. He noted that during this World Cup period, he regretted the Garuda squad’s failure to qualify. However, he observed an economic buzz emerging from the quadrennial football competition. “We are also monitoring that in several regions there are many watch-party initiatives organised by local governments and the private sector. I think this is something very positive and excellent; we hope it stimulates real economic activity within the community,” he said. Furthermore, he expressed hope and urged the public to continue fostering belief that the Garuda squad will one day qualify for the World Cup. Prasetyo also stated that the meeting would discuss PSSI’s future plans to secure World Cup qualification, as well as preparations for several FIFA Series matches the national team will play next year. John Herdman and Erick Thohir arrived together for the occasion. John said he appreciated the support given by the president and set a target of taking the Garuda national team to the 2030 World Cup. “We hope to bring this team to the World Cup in 2030, and we will need support from everyone,” he said. John also admitted he was enthusiastic and nervous about meeting the president. “Yes, of course I’m trembling,” he said.
