Prabowo Subianto: Peace and Stability Key to Indonesia-Singapore Prosperity

President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed that the relationship between Indonesia and Singapore is a strategic partnership built on a shared interest in maintaining regional stability. He stressed that peace and stability are the primary foundations for the prosperity of both countries. Prabowo made the remarks during a joint press conference with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong following the Leaders’ Retreat at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday. Prabowo noted that this was his second retreat with Singapore, serving as a momentum to strengthen ties as close neighbours. “This is my second retreat and this meeting once again demonstrates the special, unique relationship between Indonesia and Singapore. As close neighbours, Indonesia and Singapore have become close partners. We have common interests because we are in the same region, so stability and prosperity are our shared interests,” Prabowo said. According to the President, these common interests are not limited to bilateral relations but also encompass collective efforts to keep the regional situation conducive. He assessed that sustainable economic progress cannot be achieved without maintained security. Prabowo stressed that peace is not a condition that can materialise on its own without real effort. Therefore, both countries bear the responsibility to continue collaborating in maintaining regional stability. “We understand and realise that prosperity will never come without peace and stability. And peace and stability are continuous efforts that we must undertake without rest. Because stability and peace are not something that will come by themselves,” he asserted. As a follow-up, Indonesia and Singapore agreed to continue strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors. Prabowo confirmed that ongoing collaboration will be the main instrument in safeguarding the interests of both parties in the future. “We agreed that our interests must be jointly safeguarded and we must carry out continuous cooperation to benefit both parties,” Prabowo concluded. Indonesia and Singapore agreed on 26 strategic cooperation achievements, comprising 18 government-to-government and 8 business-to-business agreements, during the Leaders’ Retreat in Jakarta to strengthen the economy and connectivity. President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also agreed to maintain the Malacca Strait as a safe international shipping lane in accordance with the 1982 UNCLOS.
