Prabowo studies India's housing model to speed up homebuilding
We sent teams to China, India, and Egypt to observe, take notes, and learn..Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto said the government is studying India’s success in building 40 million housing units over a 12-year period as a benchmark for accelerating housing development in Indonesia.
“I am interested in India’s experience. They were able to build 40 million homes in 12 years—or approximately 3 million homes per year,” Prabowo said during a mass mortgage signing event for beneficiaries of the Prosperous Housing Financing Liquidity Facility (FLPP) scheme in Batang, Central Java, on Thursday.
“I am currently studying how they did it. There are certain techniques, and we can try them,” he added in remarks broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
The President acknowledged that while Indonesia’s housing achievements deserve appreciation, demand for affordable housing remains enormous, requiring innovative strategies and breakthrough policies.
He stressed that Indonesia must remain open to learning from other countries to improve its housing development practices. To identify best practices that can be adapted domestically, Prabowo said he has dispatched technical delegations to study housing programs in several countries.
“If our nation wants to progress and transform, we must not be ashamed to learn from anyone. We sent teams to China, India, and Egypt to observe, take notes, and learn. We adopt the best practices, seek the best techniques, and invite the best partners,” Prabowo said.
Reaffirming that housing is a basic public necessity, the President pledged that his administration would continue evaluating construction and financing models to increase housing production across the archipelago.
“We continue to plan and explore the best ways to increase the number of homes available to our people,” he said.
India has reported building tens of millions of affordable homes for low-income rural and urban households under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana housing program. The nationwide initiative has provided permanent homes equipped with basic utilities to millions of beneficiaries across the country.
