JAKARTA — President Prabowo Subianto has instructed state-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero) to undertake a comprehensive transformation to improve efficiency, productivity and the reliability of the national electricity supply. The government is also pushing to accelerate the use of solar energy, targeting capacity of up to 100 gigawatts (GW) as part of its energy transition agenda.

The directives were delivered at a meeting between Prabowo, Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition Bahlil Lahadalia, Investment and Downstreaming Minister and Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) head Rosan Roeslani, and PLN Director of Project Management and New and Renewable Energy Suroso Isnandar at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (14 October 2026).

Rosan said Danantara would coordinate with PLN to conduct a comprehensive review of the company’s business and operating models. The initiative is intended to strengthen efficiency, raise productivity and reduce the government’s subsidy burden.

Alongside internal reforms, the President stressed the importance of PLN’s preparedness for emergencies. Contingency planning and backup arrangements need to be strengthened to ensure reliable electricity services and enable supply disruptions to be addressed quickly across Indonesia.

The accelerated development of 100 GW of solar power was another strategic priority highlighted at the meeting. The effort is expected to expand the use of new and renewable energy and support the transformation of the national energy sector.

At the same meeting, Bahlil reported on discussions over the draft Oil and Gas Law. He also presented an assessment of efforts to improve electricity services following technical disruptions in several regions, as well as updates on fuel distribution.

On energy availability, Bahlil said national fuel stocks were secure, with supplies expected to last between 16 and 18 days.

The transformation of PLN is an important part of the government’s efforts to strengthen governance in the energy sector, maintain reliable public services and improve the efficient management of resources. Its implementation will determine how far operational reforms and the expansion of renewable energy can deliver tangible benefits for the public.
