Prabowo States Electric Sedan Cars Will Be Mass-Produced in 2028

President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has targeted that Indonesia must be capable of mass-producing electric cars by 2028. This was stated by President Prabowo during the inauguration of the electric-based commercial vehicle assembly plant owned by PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday, 9 April 2026. In front of government officials and industry players, Prabowo emphasised his pride in the achievements of the national electric vehicle industry, which is beginning to demonstrate real production capacity, from buses to trucks. “So today I am very pleased, I am very proud. We now in Indonesia have the capability to produce electric buses and trucks,” said Prabowo. He assessed that this achievement forms an important foundation for advancing to the next stage, namely large-scale production of electric passenger vehicles in the coming years. “This is very, very important and indeed our plan, I hope that in 2028 we will mass-produce electric sedan cars,” he continued. Prabowo revealed that the domestic industry’s capabilities are now quite significant. He mentioned that the production capacity of electric vehicles, particularly buses, has reached a proud figure with the domestic content level (TKDN) continuously increasing. “I received a report that VKTR’s capability can produce 10,000 electric buses with content, the domestic TKDN now at 40 percent,” he said. In fact, according to him, the increase in TKDN will continue in the coming years. “And in a short time, perhaps two years from now, it will reach 60 percent. Two years after that, it will reach 80 percent. This is something very proud,” he explained. The President also highlighted the support from regional governments that are starting to utilise domestic products. He mentioned that Central Java and DKI Jakarta have already ordered national production electric buses, including for TransJakarta services. “So there is already a bus industry, a truck industry, and I thank the Governor of Central Java, he said the Central Java Regional Government has ordered dozens of buses already. From DKI also quite a lot for TransJakarta,” he stated. However, Prabowo also issued a firm warning to other regions not to ignore domestic products. He even requested that regional heads who have not ordered national vehicles be noted.
