Prabowo Showcases Seven State Universities Entering World's Top Campuses

Indonesia now has seven state universities ranked among the world’s top 500. President Prabowo wants to see that position improve further in the coming years.

“Domestically, we are improving the quality of our universities. There are seven state universities in the world’s top 500 and this must be improved further,” he said in his State Address at the DPR/MPR on Friday (14/8/2026).

According to Prabowo, the highest-ranked state university is currently Universitas Indonesia. UI is among the world’s top 200 universities, at 191st place. Three other state universities are also on the list of the world’s best: Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), and Universitas Airlangga (Unair).

Three more state universities are among the world’s top 500: IPB University, Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS).

“This must certainly be even better in the years ahead,” the President said.

In addition to pushing for improvements in domestic higher education, the Prabowo administration is also sending Indonesian citizens to the world’s best universities, including through the Garuda Scholarship.

“The number of undergraduate students we have sent to the world’s best universities through the Garuda Scholarship has reached 416 students in 2025 and 515 in 2026,” the President said.
