President Prabowo Subianto expressed condolences on the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, following an attack by the United States and Israel. The condolence letter was delivered to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The letter was handed over through Foreign Minister Sugiono to Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi. The handover occurred during a meeting on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. ‘Welcoming His Excellency Mohammad Boroujerdi, the Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia (4/3),’ Sugiono said in a statement posted on the official Instagram account @menlu_ri. ‘I also handed over a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing profound condolences on the death of His Excellency Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran,’ he added. In addition, Sugiono and Boroujerdi discussed the still-tense situation in the Middle East. Indonesia, Sugiono said, urged all parties to respect international law and prioritise diplomatic efforts. ‘We discussed the latest developments in the Middle East. I emphasised the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter, and the need for de-escalation through diplomacy,’ he said. The body of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried soon after his death in Tehran, Iran. Khamenei will be buried in the holy city of Mashhad. According to AFP on Wednesday 4 March, the Iranian news agency Fars said the Iranian government has decided the burial location for Khamenei’s body. Ali Khamenei will be buried in Mashhad, where his father is buried in the Imam Reza shrine. Mashhad is Iran’s second-largest city. The city holds the title of ‘Holy City’ as the site of the Imam Reza Shrine, the mausoleum of the eighth Shia Imam. It is one of the holiest cities for Shia Muslims alike. ‘Before the funeral, a large farewell ceremony will be held in Tehran,’ the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on their Telegram account.
