Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s president, seeks to become a mediator in the conflict between Iran and the United States-Israel bloc. According to Nusron Wahid, who chairs the Nusantara Disaster Management Council within the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), the plan has received a positive reception from several Middle Eastern countries. Nusron disclosed this after a gathering with kyai and leaders of Islamist community organisations held in the central courtyard of the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday night (5 March 2026).

‘While considering the situation, it was conveyed that in principle the president wishes to meet Iran to mediate, and that Iran would be open to it; the steps taken by the president have garnered support from several Middle Eastern countries and other Islamic states, including Pakistan and the UAE,’ he said.

Nusron, who also serves as Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency, added that Prabowo together with leaders of the eight-country group share the same aim of pursuing peace and preventing the conflict in the Middle East from widening.

Yahya Cholil Staquf, General Chairman of the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), assessed that Prabowo has demonstrated a commitment to contributing to resolving the conflict in the Middle East. Indonesia, he noted, possesses a strategic position that could open channels of communication among parties involved.

‘What is clear is that the president emphasises his commitment; he will do whatever is necessary to contribute to peace and the resolution of the issue, especially given that the Middle East conflict today is likely to directly affect our domestic interests,’ Yahya said.

He also judged that Indonesia has an opportunity to play the role of a communications mediator because it is accepted by all sides involved in the conflict.

‘Alhamdulillah, Indonesia, under President Prabowo Subianto, is an actor accepted by all sides, and thus has the potential to act as a mediator of communication among the involved sides,’ he said.
