Prabowo Seeks to Expand Job Opportunities for Indonesians in Germany
President Prabowo Subianto wants to expand job opportunities for Indonesian citizens in Germany. He conveyed this intention during a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, 15 June 2026.
Prabowo and Steinmeier delivered a joint press statement after the meeting. “Indonesia wants to expand job opportunities for Indonesian workers in Germany, including in the high-tech sector,” Prabowo said.
Indonesia and Germany, Prabowo noted, have also signed a letter of intent for a Global Skills Partnership programme in the nursing sector. This cooperation aims to strengthen the quality of education, align competency standards, and facilitate the recognition of Indonesian nurses’ qualifications so they can work in Germany.
Furthermore, Prabowo stated that Indonesia welcomes the Partnering in Business with Germany programme, which is aimed at MSMEs. Indonesia will also host the second Joint Economic and Investment Committee this year.
Prabowo conveyed that Germany has a very good relationship with Indonesia. He said Steinmeier’s visit is an important momentum amid increasingly uncertain global dynamics. “Strengthening and sustaining the Indonesia-Germany partnership is certainly a priority,” said the Gerindra Party chairman.
Meanwhile, Steinmeier stated that Indonesia and Germany enjoy good relations. He remarked that cooperation between the two countries has the potential to be further developed.
When receiving Steinmeier, Prabowo was accompanied by several officials, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan Roeslani, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
President Steinmeier was accompanied by First Lady Elke Büdenbender. The German delegation also included representatives from the business, cultural, and science and technology sectors.
German Ambassador to Indonesia Ralf Beste said the president’s visit to Jakarta sends a message that Germany is a strong and reliable partner for Indonesia. Beste stated that Steinmeier’s visit is driven by Germany’s desire to strengthen partnerships with strong developing nations like Indonesia.
According to Ambassador Beste, Steinmeier will also hold meetings and discussions with Indonesian intellectual and research communities during his visit on Monday. “In that meeting, they will discuss how Indonesia views the current geostrategic changes in the world,” he said.
The German ambassador also expressed hope that President Prabowo would reciprocate President Steinmeier’s visit with a trip to Germany. “We hope that President Steinmeier’s visit this time can be reciprocated in the future,” Beste said.
