President Prabowo Subianto has revealed that the President of South Korea has asked him to help open a channel of dialogue with North Korea. According to Prabowo, this request reflects global confidence in Indonesia’s consistent implementation of an independent and active, non-aligned foreign policy.

“The President of South Korea asked me if I could visit North Korea to initiate some form of dialogue,” Prabowo stated during a meeting with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday. This request was made during his recent state visit to South Korea. In response, Prabowo expressed his willingness to undertake the mission should an official request be made.

“I said, I would honourably and willingly go to North Korea if requested,” he said. Prabowo believes this trust stems from Indonesia’s reputation for not interfering in the domestic affairs of other nations. He noted that this principle allows Indonesia to be accepted by various parties with differing interests.

Furthermore, Prabowo cited Indonesia’s approach to the conflict in Myanmar as a similar example of how the nation remains an acceptable mediator for all involved parties. He reaffirmed that Indonesia will continue to adhere to the non-aligned foreign policy legacy of the nation’s founders. Indonesia will not join any military blocs or pacts, choosing instead to build positive relations with all countries. Prabowo emphasised that neutrality and openness are essential assets for Indonesia to contribute to global peace and conflict resolution through diplomacy, stating, “I am striving to improve all relations with our neighbours; I am striving for reconciliation and to provide an approach.”
