President Prabowo Subianto declared that the Indonesian government respects the political process under way in the United States whilst preparing anticipatory measures. His remarks came in response to the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn President Donald Trump's global tariff policy.

The ruling held that Trump lacked the authority to impose global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Nevertheless, shortly afterwards Trump announced a new blanket global import tariff of 10 per cent.

"We are ready to face all possibilities. We respect the domestic politics of the United States. We will monitor developments," President Prabowo said in Washington, DC on Saturday, 21 February 2026, as quoted by the Presidential Media Team.

According to the head of state, the newly announced 10 per cent tariff remains within a manageable range for Indonesia. "I think, yes, it is actually favourable — the 10 per cent tariff," Prabowo said.

Speaking separately, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto noted that despite the US Supreme Court ruling, the Indonesian government would endeavour to maintain zero-tariff or duty-free access to the US market for a number of products previously agreed between Prabowo and Trump.

"Thankfully, Indonesia had already signed an agreement, and what Indonesia has requested is that whilst everyone else faces the 10 per cent rate, the products already granted zero per cent remain exempt," Airlangga said.

President Prabowo Subianto and US President Donald Trump signed a reciprocal trade agreement in Washington, DC on Thursday, 19 February 2026 local time. The signing formalised a 19 per cent tariff rate on Indonesian products entering the US. The bilateral meeting between the two heads of state lasted approximately 30 minutes following a Board of Peace session.

On 20 February 2026, the US Supreme Court ruled that Trump's trade tariff policies imposed on numerous countries were unconstitutional. The court determined that the president did not possess inherent authority to levy sweeping tariffs on any country. Within hours of the ruling, Trump announced the imposition of a 10 per cent tariff on all countries.
