President Prabowo Subianto reported to the labour masses that the government has enacted the Domestic Workers Protection Act (UU PPRT), which he described as the first in the nation’s history.

“Hari ini saya bisa melaporkan kepada saudara-saudara bahwa kita telah mensahkan Undang-Undang Perlindungan Pekerja Rumah Tangga,” said Prabowo while delivering a speech at the peak of the 2026 International Labour Day Commemoration at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Friday morning.

“In fact, since the republic was established, there has never been protection for domestic helpers; the Domestic Workers Protection Act has never existed,” added the President.

Until now, said the President, domestic workers often lack clarity regarding wages and work protections. With the enactment of this Act, for the first time, the state has a legal framework for domestic workers.

“Until now, domestic workers’ wages have been unclear. Now, for the first time in the history of the Republic of Indonesia, we have enacted the Domestic Workers Protection Act,” stated the Head of State.

On that occasion, Prabowo also expressed thanks to the labour community for inviting him to the International Labour Day commemoration.

He admitted to respecting the struggles of workers who labour with effort, sweat, and honesty to support their families.

According to him, workers, farmers, and fishermen are groups that often live in hardship, yet remain honest and sincere in their work.

“From my experience, workers, farmers, and fishermen are the ones who live in difficulty; they are honest people, sincere people. What saddens me is that the higher the rank, the more unclear they become. I’m astonished; the smarter they are, the more thieves there are. I can’t fathom it, I just can’t fathom it,” said Prabowo.

Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas stated that the formation of the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (RUU PPRT) aims to provide legal certainty and enhance the welfare of domestic workers.

He said that the bill, which has been approved by the DPR to be enacted into law, also aims to regulate harmonious working relationships while upholding values of humanity and justice.

He detailed that the regulations in the RUU PPRT cover recruitment and the scope of domestic work, working relationships between domestic workers and employers based on agreements or work contracts, as well as the rights and obligations of domestic workers, employers, and domestic worker placement companies.

Furthermore, vocational training for domestic workers and prospective workers, business licensing for domestic worker placement companies, guidance and supervision of domestic worker protection implementation, dispute resolution between employers, domestic workers, and/or placement companies, as well as the role of society in protecting domestic workers.

He emphasised that the protection and supervision of domestic worker implementation is the government’s obligation in the field of employment to realise the state’s objectives mandated by the constitution.

Based on this, said Minister Supratman, President Prabowo Subianto approved the enactment of the RUU PPRT into law.
