Prabowo Reports Food Security to Parliament: We Will Face El Niño

President Prabowo Subianto has stated that Indonesia’s food situation is secure amidst various challenging conditions. Prabowo said the government is ready to face this year’s El Niño, which is predicted to have a major impact on the global food situation.

This was conveyed by Prabowo during his state address at the 2026 MPR Annual Session and the Joint Session of the DPR-DPD at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (14/8/2026). Prabowo stated that his administration’s cabinet is working hard to achieve food self-sufficiency.

Due to his government’s policies and efforts, Prabowo said the targeted food self-sufficiency, initially projected to be achieved in 4 to 5 years, could be reached within 1 year. Therefore, Prabowo is confident that Indonesia’s food reserves are in a safe condition.

“In a world that is now very worried about mass starvation due to food difficulties and unpredictable weather, we, alhamdulillah, can report to this assembly that regarding food, regarding sustenance for the Indonesian people, we are in a safe state,” he stated.

Prabowo assessed that his administration will be able to face various challenges to Indonesia’s food reserves, including the predicted phenomenon of warming sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, or El Niño, which is forecast to reach its highest record.

“We will be able to face the challenges, including the El Niño challenge, which they say this year will be the most severe,” Prabowo reported before the members of the Council.

In his speech, Prabowo said 145 regulations on fertiliser distribution have been removed. The price of fertiliser, Prabowo said, has been reduced by 20%, which he claimed is the first time in Indonesian history.

At the same time, the profit of PT Pupuk Indonesia rose by 252.8%, according to Prabowo. Consequently, the government has achieved self-sufficiency in eight domestic food commodities.

“And because of that, this year we have achieved self-sufficiency in 8 food commodities. We have achieved self-sufficiency in rice, maize, consumption sugar, chicken meat, chicken eggs, shallots, large chillies, and bird’s eye chillies,” he added.
