Prabowo Receives Cultural Artefacts from FBI
President Prabowo Subianto received a courtesy call from the Director of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Kash Patel, at his residence in Kertanegara, Jakarta, on Wednesday (22/7). The meeting was described as an important step in strengthening cooperation between Indonesia and the United States, particularly regarding efforts to repatriate Indonesian cultural artefacts that had been illegally smuggled abroad.
Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, accompanied by Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, explained that in addition to holding an official meeting, Kash Patel directly handed over a number of Indonesian cultural artefacts to Prabowo. The handover is part of an artefact repatriation collaboration between the Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Culture, and the FBI.
“Besides talking as friends, and also officially, he also brought cultural artefacts which are the result of cooperation between the Indonesian government through the Ministry of Culture and the FBI, namely the return of cultural objects, cultural artefacts, that were smuggled into the United States illegally and after conducting provenance research or origin tracing, the objects were then returned and brought directly by Mr Kash Patel to President Prabowo Subianto,” Fadli said as quoted on Thursday (23/7).
Fadli revealed that the artefacts successfully repatriated originate from Papua, specifically the cultural heritage of the Dani tribe, the Asmat tribe, and the tribes of the Lake Sentani region. He assessed that these objects hold significant meaning as they possess high historical and cultural value for Indonesia. “I think these are very valuable objects because this repatriation process is our effort to restore our cultural sovereignty,” he continued.
According to Fadli, this is not the first time Indonesia has cooperated with the FBI on the return of cultural objects. The FBI has previously assisted in returning various stolen Indonesian artefacts, ranging from bronze statues to historical objects from several cultural sites. “We hope that cooperation with the FBI, especially regarding the repatriation and restitution of these cultural objects, will be even stronger in the future, supported also by the State Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Fadli said.
He added that the return of the cultural artefacts is part of the government’s commitment to restoring national cultural sovereignty while enriching public understanding of the nation’s historical heritage. All the artefacts will be exhibited at the National Museum so that the public can view and study them. “I think this is part of an effort to restore our cultural sovereignty to perfect cultural knowledge, and we will certainly exhibit this at the National Museum,” concluded Fadli.
