RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo - Indonesia’s president, Prabowo Subianto, encouraged a higher level of partnership between Indonesia and Japan at the Japan-Indonesia Business Forum in Tokyo on Monday, 30 March 2026. In front of Japanese businesspeople and investors, Prabowo believes that the shared interests of Indonesia and Japan can secure the future of both countries.

“I’m here not only to support our continuing partnership. I want to push it to a higher level. I want to push it faster. The world has become smaller. There is no other way but close cooperation in all fields,” Prabowo said, as monitored from the country’s Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.

“I believe strong economic ties and partnership result in enduring peace and friendship. If we have joint and common interests, we will protect the present and the future,” he continued.

As Prabowo praised Japan for becoming a very important partner for Indonesia, he admitted that many Japanese businesspeople knew Indonesia well. He also said that Indonesia today is “not the same” as it was 20 or 25 years ago.

“We are moving faster than ever before. We are trying to be more competitive, and we are determined to push and enter a new phase of growth,” he said.

Prabowo stated that Indonesia remains very open to investment and cooperation with Japan, as he believes the strengths of each nation can create a mutually beneficial relationship. He invited Japanese companies to combine their technology and financial resources with Indonesia’s scale and resources for stability and peace.

“If there’s a real partnership between the Japanese economy (and) industry, and Indonesia, both our peoples will benefit. When both our peoples benefit, this will be a pillar of peace and stability,” he said.

Prabowo added that the upgrading protocols of the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnershheip Agreement (IJEPA) can open new opportunities, thus he is convinced that the present time is the “right moment” to deepen cooperation. The agreement, first signed in 2007 and in force since 2008, was amended in 2024.

At the forum, 10 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and cooperation agreements between Indonesian and Japanese businesses were signed, totalling up to US$23.63 billion. The announced collaborations include clean energy-based projects, such as methanol production from carbon emissions, exploration and development cooperation in the oil and gas sector, and geothermal energy development.
