Prabowo Proud that Indonesian Judges' Salaries Are Higher than in Singapore and Malaysia
Jakarta, VIVA – President Prabowo Subianto said he is proud that the salaries or wages of judges in Indonesia are higher than those in Singapore and Malaysia. He made the remark in a speech on the Macro Economic Framework and the Fiscal Policy Package (KEM-PPKF) for the 2027 RAPBN in the plenary chamber of the House of Representatives, the DPR, in the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
The Head of State is proud that the salary of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (MA) in Indonesia is higher than that of the Singaporean Chief Justice. In addition, junior judges in Indonesia earn more than junior judges in Malaysia.
“I am now proud because our Chief Justice’s earnings are higher than the Chief Justice of Singapore’s. And also our junior judges’ salaries are higher than junior judges in Malaysia,” said Prabowo.
The Head of State added that there is no advanced country that does not provide legal certainty. Therefore, Prabowo said, the salaries of judges in Indonesia must be increased.
“There have been increases of up to almost 300 percent for our judges’ incomes,” he said.
Prabowo explained that the salary increases for judges are part of a cleanse of institutions. “We must not allow our judges to be bribed, bought. We do not want all our other officials to be like that either,” he explained.
Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto issued Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 5 of 2026 on the Financial Rights and Facilities of Ad Hoc Judges, which was issued on 4 February 2026 to strengthen the quality of judicial administration in Indonesia.
In the copy of the Perpres cited on Monday 4 May 2026, it stated that the regulation of financial rights and facilities for ad hoc judges is necessary because they are officials who exercise judicial power, and so they must be regulated holistically within the system of statutory regulations.
The issuance of the new regulation is also intended to improve the quality of the judiciary by supporting ad hoc judges who are honest, professional and independent in carrying out their duties.
