Prabowo proud as Indonesia begins making its own cars

President Prabowo Subianto has expressed pride that Indonesia is beginning to develop its own domestically produced cars, viewing it as an initial step towards self-sufficiency for the national automotive industry. Speaking at the National Gathering of the Indonesian Science, Technology, and Industry Convention (KSTI) in Jakarta on Friday, Prabowo said he felt a deep personal satisfaction when using the Maung presidential vehicle, which was developed by domestic industry. “I have a deep satisfaction in my heart. When I was inaugurated, I returned from the inauguration and was able to ride in an Indonesian-made car,” Prabowo said. The President admitted he had questioned why Indonesia was only now starting to make its own cars after more than eight decades of independence. However, he expressed appreciation to various parties, including universities, for helping to drive the progress of national industry. “But I thank the campuses. I am grateful that we are starting to move towards having our own car,” he stated. Prabowo said that although the Maung vehicle does not yet fully use domestic components, the local content level (TKDN) of around 60–70 percent already demonstrates progress towards national industrial independence. He even joked that during the early months of use, the vehicle experienced leaks when hit by heavy rain. “In the first few months it was alright, except when it rained hard. When it rained hard, it did leak a bit,” he said, drawing laughter from participants. Nevertheless, Prabowo stressed he would continue to use domestic products as a form of support for the revival of national industry. “At least we have started; we must dare to start,” he said. On the occasion, the President also emphasised the importance of the role of scientists, academics, and professors in driving the nation’s progress. According to him, superior human resources, mastery of technology, and a spirit of patriotism are crucial ingredients for bringing Indonesia to developed nation status. Prabowo added that cooperation among the nation’s elites is also a key factor in determining a country’s progress. “From what I have learned from thousands of years of history, nations whose elites can work together are the nations that rise,” Prabowo said.
