Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - President Prabowo Subianto has announced plans to establish a Mineral and Strategic Commodities Exchange. However, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the government cannot yet provide detailed explanations regarding the regulations and the commodities to be included. “Everything is being prepared,” he said when met at Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, Monday (17/8/2026).

Prasetyo Hadi stressed that the commodities in question are certainly Indonesia’s main natural resources. “Not yet, it has not been decided. What is certain is that these are our most important production commodities, for example CPO, nickel, coal,” he said.

He said it is expected to be similar to existing commodity exchanges such as the Indonesia Commodity Exchange or Icomex. “That is why this is in the process of being regulated in such a way. The point is not about this and that, no. The point is sovereignty over the goods we own must be determined by us. So far, that has not been the case,” he explained.

Prasetyo emphasised that the government is still reviewing the scheme and mechanism of the mineral and strategic commodities exchange. There is even an open option to merge with ICDX into a state-owned commodity exchange. “We will see later, it could possibly be merged, or it could stand alone,” he said.

For information, under the supervision of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Mineral and Strategic Commodities Exchange is targeted to operate on 1 January 2027. “Today I announce the next stage of our single-door export policy. We have discussed with OJK that we want to immediately establish a Mineral and Strategic Commodities Exchange,” said President Prabowo during his speech at the DPR RI Plenary Meeting regarding the 2027 State Budget Bill and Financial Note at the Nusantara Building, DPR RI, Jakarta, Friday (14/8/2026).

“We will soon operationalise the Mineral and Strategic Commodities Exchange under the supervision of OJK. Our plan, if OJK works well and I am confident OJK works well, these are the women who now control our economy. Our plan, with the support of the DPR, is that on 1 January 2027 we will have our own Commodity Exchange,” he said.

He explained that with the establishment of the Mineral and Strategic Commodities Exchange, Indonesia is expected to become the price setter for commodities. Moreover, the commodities sold originate from within the country’s own soil. “With this, we will build the Indonesia Reference Price for Indonesia’s main export commodities,” he stressed.

“We want to build a deep, transparent, liquid, and globally trusted market. Producers, farmers, exporters, buyers, and investors will meet in one supervised system, with clearer transaction data and increasingly narrow room for manipulation,” he explained.

If buyers from other countries do not agree with the price set on the Mineral Exchange, Prabowo asserted that it would be better for these commodities to remain stored in the ground for the future generations of Indonesian citizens. “For decades, Indonesia has been one of the world’s largest producers of palm oil, nickel, tin, coal, coffee, rubber, and various other commodities,” he said.

“But too often, the prices of wealth extracted from the earth and the sweat of the Indonesian people are determined abroad, on foreign commodity exchanges, with benchmarks that we did not create ourselves,” he said.
