Prabowo Prepares Affordable Generic Medicines for the Public

President Prabowo Subianto wants generic medicines to be sold at low prices in Indonesia. The Gerindra Party chairman is targeting realising this in the near future. Prabowo stated that the price of medicine in Indonesia should be affordable. “We will strive to provide the cheapest possible medicines to the people,” he said during the inauguration of the KH Muhammad Thohir Regional General Hospital in Krui, Lampung on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, as broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat. One way Prabowo is providing affordable medicine is through the distribution of generic drugs. “I hope that within one year we can start providing cheap generic medicines to the people,” he said. Additionally, Prabowo conveyed that a programme to modernise the national healthcare service is underway. He mentioned the government has already distributed nearly 1,000 units of modern medical equipment to regional hospitals across 514 regencies/cities. During the hospital inauguration in Lampung, Prabowo expressed his hope that the hospital would consistently serve the community. “I also message that there must be no misappropriation, no corruption in service to the people,” stated the retired Army officer. Prabowo said his administration plans to renovate 350-400 hospitals throughout Indonesia. He also wants to improve 10,000 community health centres in various corners of the country. Improving healthcare services is one of President Prabowo’s priority programmes or quick wins. According to Cabinet Secretary Teddy, the government is targeting service quality improvements at 66 regional hospitals in underdeveloped, outermost, and frontier regions. Teddy stated that 20 of 22 regional hospitals had been completed by 2025, with 10 of them already operational. Meanwhile in 2026, 4 of 20 regional hospitals have commenced construction. “In 2027, there are still 24 regional hospitals in the planning stage,” Teddy said in a written statement on Wednesday.
