Prabowo Predicts Indonesia Will Achieve Energy Self-Sufficiency in 3-4 Years

President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for Indonesia to stop importing fuel within the next three to four years. Speaking at the XVII National Farmers and Fishermen Week (PENAS) in Gorontalo Regency on Wednesday (24/6/2026), he predicted the country would achieve energy self-sufficiency by then. “I estimate that in three years, a maximum of four years, we will be self-sufficient in energy. We do not want to import anything for our fuel, for our energy, brothers and sisters,” Prabowo stated.

A key step towards this goal is the launch of a new fuel blend containing 50% palm oil-based biodiesel (B50). Prabowo said the B50 diesel launch would take place in July, just days away, and would allow Indonesia to stop importing diesel entirely while generating significant savings.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) previously targeted 1 July 2026 for the mandatory implementation of B50 biodiesel. Minister Bahlil Lahadalia explained that a series of trials on various engines and vehicles had yielded encouraging results. He noted that the water content in B50 was found to be lower than in B40.

Testing has been conducted across six sectors to ensure operational reliability, including land transportation, railways, marine transport, mining heavy equipment, and agricultural machinery. The government is currently coordinating to ensure distribution infrastructure is ready before the policy is widely enforced.
