Prabowo: Prambanan a Symbol of RI-India Brotherhood for a Thousand Years
President Prabowo Subianto has emphasised that Prambanan Temple is not merely a historical heritage site, but a powerful symbol of the civilisational relationship between Indonesia and India that has been forged for over a thousand years. He conveyed this message while accompanying Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a visit to the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. Prabowo positioned Prambanan as a stage for cultural diplomacy, representing the closeness of the two nations that goes beyond political, economic, and defence cooperation. “Today I had the opportunity to accompany His Excellency the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Mr Narendra Modi, to visit Prambanan Temple, one of the world’s great civilisational masterpieces and a cultural heritage that is the pride not only of the Indonesian nation but also of the world,” Prabowo said. According to him, the joint visit carries a significance far greater than a mere state agenda. Prambanan serves as a reminder that Indonesia and India have been connected through civilisational ties for more than a millennium. “This visit is a very special moment. Prambanan Temple is not only a symbol of Indonesia’s historical and cultural glory, but also a reminder of the strong civilisational relationship that has existed between Indonesia and India for over a thousand years,” he stated. Prabowo asserted that the relationship between the two countries has been built on a foundation deeper than diplomatic interests alone. He noted that the closeness of Indonesia and India also rests on shared cultural values, the development of science, and a tradition of mutual respect passed down across generations. “The relationship between the two nations is not only built through political, economic, and defence cooperation, but is also deeply rooted in cultural values, science, and mutual respect. The historical traces can still be seen and felt today,” Prabowo said. In his view, Prambanan Temple represents the glory of the Nusantara civilisation, combining advances in science, art, spiritual values, and humanity. “Prambanan is not just a historical building. It is a symbol of the great Nusantara civilisation that upholds science, art, spirituality, and humanity,” he concluded.
