TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto stated that Japan plays a pivotal role in Indonesia’s economic development. The Gerindra Party Chair expressed his views during the Japan-Indonesia Business Forum held in Tokyo on Monday, March 30, 2026.
Addressing a gathering of Japanese entrepreneurs, Prabowo noted that Japan has consistently supported Indonesia’s economic trajectory. “Many of you in this room have been part of that journey,” Prabowo remarked from the podium, in a broadcast shared by the Presidential Secretariat on Monday.
He observed that Japanese business leaders have maintained a presence in Indonesia for decades. According to Prabowo, this long-standing relationship has provided them with a deep understanding of the country, including its society, market, culture, and potential.
Prabowo highlighted that the business climate in Indonesia has changed significantly. “You must know also that Indonesia today is not the same Indonesia you knew maybe 20 or 25 years ago,” he told the assembled entrepreneurs.
Prabowo asserted that the Indonesian business landscape is now moving at a much faster pace than in previous eras. “We are trying to be more competitive, and we are determined to push and enter a new phase of growth,” the former Minister of Defense added.
Speaking before global business leaders, President Prabowo also conveyed that Japan remains one of Indonesia’s most trusted economic partners. He emphasized that Japan brings high-quality investment, discipline, technology, and a steadfast long-term commitment.
“That’s why Japanese investment is respected not only in Indonesia but around the world, and personally, I highly value this relationship,” he said.
The business forum in Tokyo was organized through a collaboration between the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Keidanren, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin).
Prior to the forum, Prabowo visited the Imperial Palace of Japan. He met with Emperor Naruhito and Crown Prince Fumihito at the historic Tokyo residence.
