Prabowo Praises Gaza Ceasefire: The Achievements Are Real
President Prabowo Subianto praised the ceasefire between Israeli forces and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, stating that it had demonstrated concrete achievements.
Prabowo delivered his assessment whilst speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington D.C., United States. "The achievements of this ceasefire are real — we commend this," said Prabowo, who delivered his speech in English on Thursday, 19 February 2026 local time.
Prabowo said Indonesia had joined the Board of Peace because it believed the United Nations shadow body could bring about peace, particularly in Palestine. According to Prabowo, he had supported US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza peace from the outset — Trump being the initiator of the Board of Peace.
Prabowo acknowledged that the Board of Peace would face challenges along the way, but expressed confidence in overcoming them.
The Gerindra Party chairman expressed hope that the Board of Peace could deliver solutions for the Palestinian people. "We will achieve our dream of peace in Palestine, a lasting and peaceful solution to the Palestinian issue and in Gaza," he said.
Prabowo assessed that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip had yielded tangible results. "Therefore, we reaffirm our commitment to contribute a significant number of troops — up to 8,000 or more if necessary," he said.
Prabowo stated that thousands of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) soldiers were ready to join the peacekeeping mission in Gaza. The troops, he said, would deploy to the area of operations through the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), which also includes military personnel from other nations.
Indonesia is currently preparing approximately 8,000 TNI soldiers for deployment to the Gaza Strip through the ISF. The ISF is planned to operate under the direction of the Board of Peace, established by US President Donald Trump and approved by the United Nations Security Council through Resolution 2803 on 17 November 2025.
At the Board of Peace's first meeting on Thursday, President Trump expressed appreciation for the attendance of national representatives, including President Prabowo. Trump noted that countries joining the Board of Peace were not only contributing financially but were also willing to send personnel to maintain the ceasefire in Gaza.
Trump then singled out Indonesia as one of the countries that would be sending troops to Gaza. "Indonesia, thank you very much, Indonesia. That's a great country," Trump said.
Indonesia's involvement in the Board of Peace has drawn criticism domestically. The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), for instance, argued that membership in the US-led international body betrayed the spirit and values of the Indonesian people, who have long sided with Palestine.
YLBHI highlighted the plan to send thousands of Indonesian soldiers to "assist" the US and Israel in demilitarising Hamas in Palestine. YLBHI stressed that this set a dangerous precedent against Palestine's rights as a state.
