Prabowo Pledges 1 Million Homes for Workers: Can Be Instalment-Paid Up to 40 Years

Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto received input from workers during the International Labour Day (May Day) commemoration. He pledged to provide affordable housing needs for workers.

The Head of State explained that this year the government has built 350,000 housing units and will accelerate efforts to meet the target of one million homes.

This was stated by Prabowo at the 2026 International Labour Day or May Day event at the National Monument (Monas) on Friday, 1 May 2026.

“We have already built quite a lot this year, up to 350,000 homes. But our target is at least one million homes. We will start this year as well with one million homes,” said Prabowo.

The homes being built are located near industrial areas, making them close to workplaces.

In addition, Prabowo plans to create new cities consisting of 100,000 apartment units equipped with school facilities, sports amenities, hospitals, daycares, and public transportation.

“And I have planned, we will build new cities. New cities, each city might consist of 100,000 homes, 100,000 apartments,” said Prabowo.

“I have ordered that there must be schools, there must be sports facilities, there must be daycares, there must be hospitals, and most importantly there must be transportation, whether light rail, buses, so that workers can get to work smoothly and well,” he emphasised.

On the other hand, Prabowo highlighted that 30 percent of workers’ income is spent on house rentals. Therefore, he believes the government-initiated housing programme can be a solution for workers.

Prabowo stressed that the subsidised housing construction programme is not free. According to him, workers can instalment-pay it for at least 20 years up to a maximum of 40 years.

“So what was previously 30 percent for rent, we reduce that, that is for you to instalment-pay your own home. Instalment-pay it for 20 years, if you can’t, 25 years, if not settled in 25 years, instalment-pay 30 years. If not possible, 35 years, instalment-pay up to 40 years,” he concluded.
