The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has spoken out regarding President Prabowo Subianto’s plan to realise a solar power plant (PLTS) project with a total capacity of 100 Giga Watts (GW). The massive project is targeted for completion by 2029.

Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (Dirjen EBTKE) at the Ministry of ESDM, Eniya Listiani Dewi, revealed that cross-ministerial coordination is ongoing to execute the massive programme. Her office has already received direction from the State Secretariat (Setneg) to immediately discuss legal certainty for accelerating national solar investment.

“Not yet, we haven’t met the Minister (Bahlil) yet. But the order from the State Secretariat is already there to discuss it immediately,” she said when met at the DPR RI Building, Jakarta, quoted on Wednesday (15/7/2026).

The government will prioritise the issuance of a Presidential Regulation (Perpres) regarding the 100 GW PLTS over continuing the revision of regulations concerning other new renewable energy prices. This is a follow-up to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources’ instruction to accelerate green infrastructure development so that it is not hampered by administrative obstacles.

“Regarding the price revision of Perpres 112, we will prioritise the 100 GW Perpres first. Because that is the Minister’s directive to accelerate it,” Eniya continued.

In addition to solar power, the government is also encouraging the optimisation of geothermal potential as a baseload energy source. The advantage of geothermal is considered more stable and unaffected by climatic factors compared to hydro or solar power, which require additional battery systems.

“So, the EBT that can be compared apple-to-apple with replacing fossil fuels is geothermal. Hydro is affected by the climate. During the dry season, the water discharge decreases, but geothermal is continuous,” she stressed.

As is known, President Prabowo Subianto is accelerating the transition to green energy, one of which is through the target of building massive solar power capacity. He is targeting Indonesia to achieve an installed capacity of up to 100 GW by at least 2029.

Prabowo emphasised that the government will maximise the use of electricity from solar energy within the next three years.

“We want to move very quickly to use electricity from solar energy. We have a plan and we are determined to move as fast as possible, within three years, we want to reach 100 gigawatts of solar energy,” Prabowo said at the Indonesia-Japan Business Forum in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday (30/3/2026).

The plan to accelerate solar power plant construction is considered urgent to realise. According to him, the escalating conflict and growing geopolitical uncertainty, particularly in the Middle East region, pose a threat to national energy supply stability.

“For us, this is more urgent because the geopolitical situation in the Middle East provides strategic uncertainty for our energy security,” Prabowo stressed.

As a precaution, the government continues to strive to secure supply through the utilisation of domestic resources. Besides solar power, Indonesia also has great potential in the geothermal sector and is currently boosting the production of biofuels such as B50 biodiesel and bioethanol.
