Prabowo Orders Investigation into Attack on Andrie Yunus
President Prabowo Subianto has ordered his administration to investigate the caustic acid attack on human rights activist Andrie Yunus. The instruction was given specifically to National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
“Regarding the activist spraying incident, I have received a direct order from the President to conduct a thorough investigation in a professional and transparent manner,” said Sigit in Surabaya, East Java, on Sunday, 15 March 2026, as reported by Antara.
According to Sigit, police will investigate the attack on Andrie through a scientific investigative approach. He promised that every stage of case handling would be conducted objectively and based on evidence.
Currently, Sigit said, police are gathering information about the incident. “We are currently conducting information gathering and that information will subsequently be examined one by one,” he said.
Additionally, he said, the police also plan to open a complaint post for members of the public who have information about the Andrie Yunus case. The public can subsequently report it directly to police.
Sigit emphasised that every piece of information from the public will be followed up. The public will also be guaranteed protection when assisting the investigation process. “All information provided by members of the public who help will be granted protection guarantees by us,” said Sigit.
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka expressed concern over the attack on Andrie Yunus, an activist with the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras). This was conveyed through the Vice President’s Special Staff, Tina Talisa.
“Violent acts such as this cannot be justified in a nation that upholds law, humanity, and democratic values,” said Tina in her written statement on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
She said the state is committed to ensuring that cases of violence against its citizens are handled seriously and fairly. According to her, President Prabowo Subianto has also directed law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this attack.
Previously, Andrie Yunus was sprayed with caustic acid whilst on Jalan Salemba I-Talang in Central Jakarta on Thursday evening, 12 March 2026. Andrie was sprayed with a hazardous solution by two unknown individuals riding a motorcycle.
The perpetrators of the acid spray attack came from the opposite direction to Andrie. Kontras Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya said the perpetrators sprayed caustic acid at the front of Andrie’s body.
The corrosive chemical affected Andrie’s right side including his eyes, face, chest, and hands. Part of the victim’s clothing also melted from the caustic acid.
According to medical records, Andrie sustained burns covering 24 percent of his body. Andrie Yunus also underwent eye surgery as a result of being struck by the caustic liquid.
