Prabowo orders Himbara to cut lending rates for the poor

Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has ordered the banks affiliated with the Himpunan Bank Milik Negara (Himbara) to lower lending rates for low-income people. ‘The poor are made to pay higher interest rates than large entrepreneurs. I order the state banks to change this. Lower the interest for the poor,’ Prabowo said during the 19th Plenary Session of the DPR RI for the 2025–2026 Session Year at the DPR Building in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The President argued that the situation reflects injustice, as ordinary people shoulder higher credit costs than large business groups.

According to Prabowo, large business players with strong capital should be able to seek financing from various commercial sources, including global markets, without relying on domestically low-rate credit.

His statements, he added, align with the direction of the Pancasila economic policy, which places the state in ensuring welfare and social justice.

This strategic move aims to boost the share of government spending and the national budget capacity, so that the government has enough fiscal space to fund various social safety-net programmes.
