Prabowo Orders GBK Redevelopment to Become National Economic Icon

President Prabowo Subianto has instructed a comprehensive redevelopment of the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex to be developed into a new centre of economic growth in Jakarta. Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM and Head of BPI Danantara, Rosan Roeslani, reported that the directive was given during a meeting with the Red and White Cabinet at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, 22 June 2026. “The plan is to make it a new icon in Indonesia. It will be comprehensively changed, not only in the GBK area but the entire area will be redesigned, including the golf course and the GBK area which covers approximately 200 hectares,” Rosan said after the meeting. Rosan explained that the development of the GBK area will involve several state-owned enterprises, such as InJourney and Meru, once the administrative process coordinated by the Ministry of State Secretariat is completed. The development concept, he said, is still being finalised with an integrated approach to ensure a broader economic impact. “There will be hotels, and not just one. The President’s message is to make this a new icon for Indonesia, so the planning must be comprehensive and provide a tangible impact on the economy and, most importantly, on the people of Indonesia,” he stated. Rosan added that the GBK area will be upgraded to a world-class standard as part of strengthening the national sport tourism concept. “The GBK will still be there, but everything will be enhanced and perfected to a world-class standard, so it can also provide a new economic hub in Jakarta,” he said. Furthermore, Rosan noted that the development is directed at improving the quality of Indonesian tourism, focusing not only on the number of visits but also on economic added value. “So we can capture all layers of tourism, from the mass market to the high-end or experience-based segment,” he concluded.
