Prabowo orders construction of 100 gigawatt solar power plants to drive electrification
Jakarta (ANTARA) — President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for the development of solar power plants (PLTS) with a capacity of 100 gigawatts as part of accelerating Indonesia’s electrification programme and achieving national energy self-sufficiency.
He stated that this measure forms part of the government’s efforts to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy whilst strengthening Indonesia’s energy resilience.
“We will implement electrification and renewable energy from solar power. In the shortest time possible, we will build 100 gigawatts,” said Prabowo during the 1 Year Danantara event at Wisma Danantara, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
The President emphasised that the development of large-scale solar plants is a direct government decision to accelerate the achievement of energy self-sufficiency targets.
According to him, Indonesia possesses very substantial potential energy sources to support energy resilience in the future, ranging from solar energy to geothermal heat.
Prabowo stated that Indonesia’s geothermal reserves rank amongst the largest in the world, yet remain underutilised.
The President also highlighted the potential of biofuels derived from agricultural commodities such as palm oil, cassava, maize, and sugarcane that can be processed into alternative energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
With these various potential resources, Prabowo expressed confidence that Indonesia is capable of accelerating development in the energy sector whilst enhancing national energy independence.
“This is already my directive, this is already my decision, and we will prove to the world that we are faster and more effective in this regard,” Prabowo asserted.
