Prabowo Orders Cattle Cloning: 'We Need Many'

President Prabowo Subianto has stressed the importance of food self-sufficiency to ensure the welfare of the Indonesian people. Various government programmes are aimed at achieving this goal. During the Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD in the framework of the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia at the Nusantara Building, Senayan Parliament Complex, Central Jakarta, on Friday (14/8/2026), Prabowo also revealed a directive to carry out cattle cloning. “We need many cattle, and with that we can obtain cloning technology. With cloning, we can multiply our livestock,” Prabowo said in his speech. On the same occasion, Prabowo also mentioned that Indonesia’s self-sufficiency in eight commodities has been recognised globally. The eight commodities in question are rice, corn, consumer sugar, chicken meat, chicken eggs, shallots, large chillies, and bird’s eye chillies. Nevertheless, Prabowo acknowledged that Indonesia is still not self-sufficient in meat. He committed to achieving this target within the next five to six years. For this purpose, cloning could be one of the solutions to reach the target.
