Prabowo Opts to Build Bridges in Remote Areas Rather Than Monuments
President of the Indonesian Republic Prabowo Subianto stated that certain parties want his government to construct large monuments and skyscrapers. He acknowledged that he does not give much thought to such proposals. According to him, he prioritises infrastructure that has significant impact on the people.
“There are parties who want to build grand monuments, construct skyscrapers, build luxurious buildings. No, the government I lead is proud that we address the difficulties of our smallest people, our most distant people, our most remote people,” Prabowo said during the inauguration of 218 bridges on Monday (9 March).
Prabowo mentioned that some believe bridges of modest size built in remote areas are not strategically important. He stated that he thinks otherwise, saying such infrastructure is important because it benefits the community.
During the inauguration of the 218 bridges, Prabowo said he felt more relieved because it brings benefits to the people. “In truth, these bridges are strategic for the government I lead. That the interests of the people are what we prioritise most,” he said.
He gave an example of how the presence of such bridges can facilitate children in remote areas in accessing school. Prabowo stated that with these bridges, they no longer need to go through the trouble or risk their lives when crossing rivers.
“Children in remote villages no longer need to cross rivers with danger to their safety. Our children in remote areas no longer need to sit in class with wet clothes, returning from school with wet clothes,” he said.
