Prabowo: One Strait of Hormuz Determines Oil Prices

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto referred to the Strait of Hormuz in the Iranian region, stating that it determines the fate of many nations. From this strait, which is approximately 33-95 kilometres wide, Prabowo said that the Strait of Hormuz determines global oil prices. “Now, the war in the Middle East proves that one strait, the Strait of Hormuz, determines the lives of many nations and the price of oil,” Prabowo stated during his briefing before members of the Cabinet Merah Putih at the Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4/2026). Because, Prabowo conveyed, 70 per cent of energy and trade routes in Asia pass through Indonesian waters. “Are we aware that the Strait of Malacca, the Sunda Strait, the Makassar Strait, and so on are Indonesian seas? Are we aware of how important Indonesia is, how key Indonesia is, 70 per cent of energy,” said Prabowo. Meanwhile, Indonesia is seen by him as a country blessed with abundant natural resources compared to other nations. “Because sometimes we ourselves cannot protect our environment. Our forests are cleared, trees on our mountains are felled, as a result water cannot be retained, leading to drought,” said Prabowo. Due to Indonesia’s importance in the eyes of the world, he emphasised to the Cabinet Merah Putih members to lead this nation well. “Properly and competently,” Prabowo stressed.
