Prabowo Officially Launches 100 GWp Solar Power Project, Targeting Completion by 2029

President Prabowo Subianto has officially launched a solar power plant (PLTS) programme with a capacity of 100 gigawatt peak (GWp) for Indonesia. Prabowo has also set an aggressive target that the entire solar capacity must be built within three years, by 2029.

“Ladies and gentlemen, today is an important day. We are launching 100 gigawatts of solar power for the Indonesian nation,” Prabowo said in his remarks at the Launching and Groundbreaking Ceremony of the 100 GWp Solar Power Programme on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.

Prabowo then provided an overview of the scale of the target. According to him, Indonesia’s current electricity capacity comes from various energy sources, including coal, oil, gas and geothermal.

“To give you an idea, all of Indonesia’s electricity now is 88 gigawatts from coal, oil, gas and geothermal — all of that is 88 gigawatts,” he said.

Given this situation, building 100 GWp of solar power within three years is a project of unprecedented scale. The government is not only pursuing additional generation capacity but also seeking to accelerate changes in the national energy structure.

“We will build 100 gigawatts. And we are not playing around. Our target is 100 gigawatts in three years (2029),” Prabowo stressed.

At the launch, Prabowo officially commenced the 100 GWp solar power programme, with the initial phase marked by the construction of 14 solar plants in five provinces. The 14 projects are spread across West Java, East Java, Bali, the Bangka Belitung Islands and the Riau Islands.

“On this afternoon, Tuesday 25 August 2026, by the grace of Almighty God, I, Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, hereby officially launch the 100 gigawatt peak solar power programme, beginning with 14 solar plants in the provinces of West Java, East Java, Bali, the Bangka Belitung Islands and the Riau Islands, with a total capacity of 5.3 gigawatt peak,” Prabowo said.

The government previously stated that Indonesia has solar energy potential of around 3,294 GWp, but installed solar capacity as of April 2026 was only around 1.5 GWp.

The government has planned the construction of 100 GWp of solar power in stages, with Phase I at 17 GWp, Phase II at 18 GWp and Phase III at 30 GWp.

Throughout 2025, the government built 15 renewable energy plants consisting of 12 solar plants and three micro-hydro plants with a value of Rp103.3 billion. These plants have served 1,831 households and 131 public facilities.
